SOUTH KENT, CT - Sophomore Brandon Matthews and junior Matt Teesdale were among the Top 10 golfers to help lead Temple men's golf to a fourth-place showing after the first day of competition at the Hartford Hawk Invitational Monday at the Bull's Bridge Golf Club.
Matthews shot a one-over 145 over the first 35 holes to tie for sixth among the 96-golfer field but the play of Teesdale, who was one shot back with a 146 to tie for ninth, was the story of the day.
Teesdale was two-over on his second round with three holes to play before catching lighting in a bottle and finishing with a birdie, double eagle and eagle for a four-under 68 to tie Rutgers' Doug Walters for the low round of the day.
"It was the greatest finish to a round I have ever seen," said Temple head coach Brian Quinn.
As a team, Temple shot 18-over for the day for a 594. The Owls are 10 shots behind Rutgers (584), who leads the 17-team field. Host Hartford is one shot back (585) while Loyola-Maryland is in third with a 588. UConn is nine shots behind Temple and in fifth place with a 603. The Huskies are followed by Rhode Island (605), Seton Hall (610), Bryant (611), Long Island (613), Sacred Heart (614), Holy Cross (616), Saint Joseph's (620), Brown (622), Hofstra (623), Fairfield (633), Iona (639) and UMass-Lowell (645).
Senior Matt Crescenzo was third for the Owls and tied for 21st with a six-over 150. Juniors Mike Amole (153) and Alec Kissell (160) rounded out the Cherry and White five. Temple freshman Evan Galbreath, competing as an individual, was tied for 24th with a 151.
Play concludes tomorrow.
