9.28.13 | Women's Tennis
PHILADELPHIA – The Temple women's tennis team had five players in action in singles play on Saturday at the SJU Invitational. All five players won at least one match at their flight and Jordan Batey, Rebecca Breland and Alicia Doms all still in the running for flight titles.
At the first flight, Doms won her opening round match over Megan Hahn of Loyola, 4-6, 6-1, 10-5, before defeating Delaware's Carmen Lai, 6-2, 6-0, to advance to the semifinals on Sunday. Doms will take on Aurora Davis of Saint Joseph's at 8:30 a.m. for a chance to move to the title match.
Also playing at the first flight, Yana Mavrina dropped her opening match to Fairfield's Monica Yajima, 6-2, 6-1. The senior bounced back with a 6-2, 6-2, victory against Saint Francis's Shivani Patel in the consolation round and will square off against Villanova's Mikelle Mancini at 8:30 Sunday morning.
At the second flight, Breland defeated Allison Radde of Fairfield, 6-2, 6-4 in the opening round. She then pulled out a super tiebreaker match against Alex Sachs of Saint Francis, 6-4, 2-6, 10-8, and will take on Nataliya Naumova of Delaware at 8:30 Sunday morning.
At flight three, Batey cruised right along in her opening round match, defeating Kaila Nelson, 6-1, 6-4. She had an even easier time in her second match, blanking Kim Milla of Delaware, 6-0, 6-0. Batey faces Lea Winkler at 8:30 Sunday morning in the semifinal round.
Carly Bohman also had a relatively easy go of it in her opening round at the fourth flight. The senior defeated Michele Vona of Saint Joseph's, 6-1, 6-1, to move on and face Taya Zoubareva of Saint Francis. Her run ended there, however, as Zoubareva took a 7-6(6), 6-4 victory in the second round.
In addition to the singles players still active for TU, the doubles tandem of Batey and Bohman will also resume their quest for a title with a match against Lucy Jasso and Danielle Gryckiewicz on Sunday.
