STATE COLLEGE, Pa. – In its first meet after the winter break, the Temple fencing team went 3-2 at the Penn State Invitational. The Owls earned a hard-fought, 14-13 win against Columbia, as well as a 17-10 win against UNC and a 24-3 win over Haverford.

The Owls' losses were by scores of 10-17 to Penn and 7-20 to host Penn State.

"We fenced three top 10 schools and faced some very strong competition today," said head coach Nikki Franke. "It was probably the hardest day we will have this season. Everyone hung in there and was fighting hard. Hopefully we learned some things and saw things that worked well, and also saw some things that we need to work on. It was a long day, but beating Columbia was great for us. We haven't beaten them in a long time."

The Owls' sabre team went an undefeated 9-0 against Columbia and Haverford. They went 7-2 against UNC, while the epee squad was 6-3. Freshman Noelle Baptiste was 3-0 for epee against UNC, and 8-3 overall after a strong performance. Senior Epiphany Georges was 3-0 for the foil team against UNC.

The epee squad fared the best against nationally ranked Penn State, losing narrowly by a score of 5-4.

Both epee and foil lost narrowly to Penn, 5-4. Sophomore Fatima Largaespada (foil) was 3-0 vs. the Quakers.

Epee senior Chantal Montrose finished the day at 6-6, while sabre senior Tasia Ford was 5-5 overall. Junior Tiki Kastor, also sabre, went 7-4 overall.

The Owls will be back in action Jan. 17-20 at the January NAC – Div1/U-20 Event in Virginia Beach, Va.
