Women's Tennis Team Captains

Women's Tennis Opens 2014 Spring Season at #69 Princeton

1.24.14 | Women's Tennis

PHILADELPHIA Temple's women's tennis team will take the court for the first time in 2014 with a match at #69 Princeton on Saturday, January 25, at 11 a.m. Seniors Alicia Doms and Yana Mavrina lead the team in the captains' roles for the second-straight year.

The year marks the first for the American Athletic Conference, the conference the Owls moved to from the Atlantic 10 at the beginning of the 2013-14 academic year. The women's squad will be vying for the first-ever title in a very competitive league against nationally ranked powers Memphis (31st), SMU (52nd), USF (59th) and Louisville (70th). The rest of the league consists of UCF, Cincinnati, Connecticut Houston and Rutgers.

After opening the season at Princeton, the Owls will be home at Legacy Youth Tennis and Education Center for the entire month of February, hosting five teams. TU welcomes cross-city rival Drexel on February 5 before hosting St. Francis (N.Y.) on February 9. The Cherry and White take on former A-10 foe Xavier on February 15 and turn around to host Fairleigh Dickinson the next day. Stony Brook visits Philly on February 21, marking the final home match for Temple for over a month.

The squad heads on the road beginning with a March 1 trip to Hampton, and will not return home until April 6. During that time, the Owls will travel to non-conference foes Old Dominion, Lehigh, Binghamton, Penn, Villanova and UMBC. Throughout March, the squad also visits new conference opponents Houston, #52 SMU, Rutgers and UConn. Temple wraps up the regular season with three final home matches at TU Pavilion, hosting Providence on April 6, Fordham on April 9 and La Salle on April 11.

The team then heads to the inaugural American Athletic Conference Championship, hosted by South Florida, to compete for the title April 17-20.

Doms and Mavrina are the only two returning all-conference players for the Owls.

Doms, a first-team selection last season, played the majority of her singles matches at the top flight, but also played matches at the second, third and fourth flights throughout the year. She posted a 13-11 overall record, going 6-5 at No. 1. In doubles play, Doms played primarily with classmate Jordan Batey, going 10-12 overall including a 5-2 mark at the No. 2 spot.

Mavrina is a three-time all-league player with second-team selections as a freshman and last year, and first-team accolades as a sophomore. The senior finished the season with a 10-15 overall singles record that included a 9-12 dual mark. She played anywhere between the first and third flights, going 5-4 at No. 2 and 3-0 at No. 3. In doubles action, Mavrina and sophomore Rebecca Breland led the team with a 12-5 record, including a 6-1 mark against A-10 foes. Mavrina is just the fifth Temple player to earn three all-conference selections.

Temple finished the year 10-14 overall, going 3-6 against Atlantic 10 teams. The squad defeated Saint Louis, 4-1, in the opening round of the Atlantic 10 tournament before falling to eventual champion, #38 VCU, 4-0.
