PHILADELPHIA - After a month-long break, Temple fencing begins its season in earnest this weekend at the Penn State Invitational on Sunday, Jan. 12. The Owls will be going up against fencers from Penn State, Duke, UNC, Columbia and Drew in dual meet action.
Last year's Penn State Invitational saw Temple finish 3-2, with wins over Duke (16-11), UNC (18-9) and Drew (26-1). The Owls suffered a 23-4 loss to Columbia, and a 20-7 loss to host Penn State.
The Owls went 3-1 at their first meet of the 2013-14 season, the Sacred Heart Invitational. The foil team was undefeated in all of its dual matches, as were four individual fencers. The Owls earned team wins over NYU (25-2), Sacred Heart (15-12) and Vassar (22-5), while losing only to nationally ranked Harvard (17-10), last year's seventh-place finisher among women's teams at the NCAA Championships.
Following the Penn State Invitational, the Owls will be in action every weekend for another month. Next up is the January NAC - Div 1/U-20 Event in Virginia Beach, Va., from Jan. 17-20.
