HUNTINGDON VALLEY, PA - Junior Brandon Matthews won his first tournament of the season, and fifth of his career, shooting a two-under 138 to win the 2014 Temple Invitational and help his Owls win the tournament by 18 strokes over second place Hartford. It was the first team title for Temple Golf since the 2013 Wildcat Invitational.
Matthews shot consecutive 69s at the 6,670-yard par 70 North Course at Philmont Country Club. He was one of only two golfers to shoot under par Sunday, the other being Rhode Island's Joseph Leavitt, who shot a 66 to place second overall with a one-over 141.
Joining Matthews in the overall Top 10 were three of his teammates. Senior Pat Ross (72-74, 146) tied for sixth while senior Matt Teesdale (70-77, 147) and freshman Mark Farley (76-71, 147) tied for ninth.
Freshman Evan Thornton (77-71, 148) also had a great day, shooting a one-under 71 to tie Farley for the third best round by an Owl on the day. Thornton also had the shot of the day, making a hole-in-one on the par 3, 202-yard 17th.
The Owls posted a five-over 572 as a team, with Hartford carding a 590. Drexel (595) was third followed by Penn (596), Georgetown (597), Rhode Island (599), Seton Hall (603), Binghamton (607), Cornell (610), Fordham (612), La Salle (613), Saint Joseph's (625), Brown (628) and Temple B (643).
Evan Notaro (82-72, 154) led Temple's B team and tied for 38th, respectively. Alec Kissell (77-84, 161), Bobby Firth ((76-85, 161), Joey Rueter (88-82, 179) and Liam Fahey (85-87, 172) also competed on the squad.
Temple next tees off at the Georgetown Invitational on October 20-21.
