Nationally Ranked Temple Fencing Team Announces 2014-15 Schedule

10.14.14 | Women's Fencing

PHILADELPHIA – The Top 10 nationally ranked Temple fencing team has released its schedule for the 2014-15 season, beginning with the 35th annual Temple Open on Nov. 1 and Nov. 2. Legendary head coach Nikki Franke stands just one win away from reaching the 700-win plateau this season.

Franke has the Owls set for another challenging season, one in which Temple will face all of the other teams that finished in the top 10 at last year's NCAA Championships. Temple placed eighth among women's teams last March, and sent four representatives to the NCAA meet. The Owls posted a dual meet record of 28-8 overall, giving Franke an all-time record of 699-196-1.

As is tradition, Temple will start its season by hosting the Temple Open, which is the largest individual collegiate tournament in the nation. The meet will feature women's competition on Saturday, Nov. 1, and men's fencing on Sunday, Nov. 2.

"The Temple Open is great," said Franke. "It's the beginning of the season and it's something our team looks forward to. It's a mixture of excitement and anxiety."

Franke and her staff have made the commitment each year to host the tournament. While she admits it is a lot of hard work, she says it pays off in the end.

"It's a lot to put together, but teams keep coming back and more teams keep wanting to come," she said. "The reputation of the tournament really puts Temple's name out there in the fencing world, which is a really positive thing for the University."

Later in November, the Owls will head to the Penn State Open for another individual tournament.

"The two tournaments at the beginning of the season, the Temple Open and the Penn State Open, really give us a chance to see everybody compete," said Franke. "Then, as usual, we have a very strong schedule. We're fencing every top 10 team from last year, and that's what we want to do. We want to fence the best. It's a strong, tough schedule, but it's going to help make us better."

Temple's first dual meets of the season are on Dec. 7 at the Sacred Heart Meet. The Owls will face Harvard, last year's fourth-place finisher among women's teams at the NCAA Championships, as well as Sacred Heart, Vassar and NYU.

After an Alumnae Meet on Jan. 4, Temple will head back to State College for the Penn State Invitational. The Nittany Lions were last year's NCAA National Champions, and that tournament will feature other strong competition in Duke, UNC, Columbia and Haverford.

Late January will see Temple head to the nearby Philadelphia Invitational at Penn. The following week, on Jan. 31-Feb. 1, Temple will compete at the Northwestern Multi-Meet featuring many of the nation's top teams including 2013 National Champion Princeton, Stanford, Notre Dame, and Ohio State. On Feb. 8, the Owls will travel to FDU to face the host team along with Stevens, NJIT, Brandeis and John's Hopkins.

The Owls' final home meet is the Temple Invitational, set for Saturday, Feb. 21. Brown is a new addition to this year's guests at that meet, which will also feature Penn State, St. John's, Penn and Princeton in a power-packed lineup of competitors.

"Our schedule is always a good test to see where we are," said Franke, "especially for the younger fencers, to see what strong college fencing is like."

Temple will look for its 19th straight NIWFA Championship on Feb. 28, and the Owls will then hope to have their entire team qualified for the NCAA Regionals on March 7 at Duke. The NCAA Championships are set for March 19-22 at Ohio State University.
