Men's Tennis Gets Play Underway at ITA Atlantic Regional

CHARLOTTESVILLE, Va. - Five Temple men's tennis players were in action on the first day of competition at the ITA Atlantic Regional Championship, hosted by the University of Virginia at the Snyder Tennis Center. Hicham Belkssir, Santiago Canete, Vineet Naran, Filip Stipcic, and Hernan Vasconez played in the singles qualifying draws on Thursday.
Canete won both of his matches played in the qualifying draw, advancing him to compete in the main draw round of 128 tomorrow against George Cartledge of Virginia Tech. Canete opened play with a 6-4, 7-5 win over Stephen Goldman of James Madison before winning his round of 16 singles match against Norfolk State's Daniel Grauel with a score of 6-3, 6-2.
Vasconez won his round of 32 match against Tim Kane of Duquesne 6-3, 6-4 before dropping a match to Aaron Capitel from George Mason 6-2, 6-3. Also victorious in the round of 32 was Belkssir, beating Kevin Gates from St. Joseph's with a score of 6-4, 6-1 but dropped his next match 6-4, 6-0 to Max Kane of Bucknell. Stipcic was a 6-4, 4-6, 7-5 winner over Miljan Ruzic of James Madison in the round of 32. He then fell to Joe Hill of George Mason, 5-7, 6-2, 6-0 in the round of 16. Naran dropped his round of 32 match 6-2, 6-2 to Richmond's Canyon Teague.
Three doubles teams compete tomorrow morning for Temple while Nicolas Paulus gets started in the main singles draw tomorrow afternoon against Navy's Blake Daniel. In doubles action, Paulus and Belkssir face the No. 5 seeded pair from Virginia, Ryan Shane and Luca Corinteli, in the opening round. Canete and Stipcic team up to take on Daniel Wright and Octavio Canibe from Bucknell, while Vasconez and Naran face Tim Abbracciamento and William Elmore from Villanova.
