Matthews Ties for 9th at Wendy's Kiawah Classic

CHARLESTON, S.C. - Junior Brandon Matthews kept his string of Top 10 finishes alive, tying for ninth at the Wendy's Kiawah Classic Tuesday. The Owls finished in 15th place in the 20-team field at the three-day event held at the 7,061-yard, par 72 Turtle Point Golf Course in Charleston, S.C.
Matthews, who carded a three-under 69 in the final round, recorded a one-over 217 after starting the tourney with an uncharacteristic five-over par. The reigning American Athletic Conference Golfer of the Month has now posted Top 10 finishes in all six fall events, and owns a 71.3 stroke average with eight of his 15 rounds being under par.
Senior Patrick Ross was second for the Owls and tied for 55th place in the 108-player field with a 12-over 228. Senior Matt Teesdale (79-78-75, 234) was next and tied for 73rd while freshmen Mark Farley (77-76-81, 234) and Evan Thornton (85-79-76, 240), rounded out the Owls squad tied for 79th and 97th, respectively.
Winthrop won the team title with a 864, four strokes ahead of Georgia Southern (868). Marquette and Missouri tied for third at 878 with Jacksonville State and Georgia Regents- Augusta tying for fifth (881). The Owls were 42 shots off the pace with a 906 total.
GSU's Scott Wolfes, who shot a course record nine-under 63 on the final round, and USC Upstate's Ryan Cornfield finished as co-medalists with six-under 216s.
