Women's Basketball Entertains Florida State on Sunday

PHILADELPHIA -- The Temple women's basketball team will look to snap a three-game skid on Sunday, hosting Florida State at 2 p.m. at McGonigle Hall. The 3-6 Owls will face the 8-1 Seminoles, a team that is receiving votes in both the AP and USA Today Top 25 polls.Â
Temple is coming off an 88-55 loss to No. 17/19 Rutgers on Wednesday. With eight minutes off the clock, Temple and Rutgers were knotted at 14-14, but the Scarlet Knights went on a 31-13 run to close the half with a 45-27 lead, putting the game out of reach for the Owls. Tyonna Williams led Temple with 14 points and a game-high seven assists, including connecting on her first four three point attempts. Rookie Khadijah Berger notched nine points for the Owls, while classmate Tanaya Atkinson and sophomore Safiya Martin each added eight points. Junior Erica Covile was the team's top rebounder, pulling down seven boards.
Four players are averaging double-figures in scoring for the Owls, led by sophomore Feyonda Fitzgerald's 12.9 points per game. Fitzgerald also dishes out 3.0 assists per game. Freshman Alliya Butts is second on the team in scoring with 11.8 points per game, and also leads the Owls with 19 total steals. Tyonna Williams has recorded 11.7 points per game with a team-best 3.9 assists per contest. Freshman Tanaya Atkinson rounds out the double-digit scorers with 10.3 points per game, also contributing 6.4 boards per game. Junior Erica Covile and sophomore Safiya Martin lead the Owls on the boards, averaging 7.4 and 7.3 rebounds per game, respectively.Â
Florida State is 8-1 on the season and is receiving votes in both the AP and the USA Today Top-25 polls. The Seminoles have won four in a row, most recently topping in-state rival, Florida, 77-51 at home. Against Florida, FSU opened the game with a 16-2 run and didn't look back. The Seminoles shot 27-of-59 from the floor (45.8 percent) en route to the 26-point victory. Sophomore Ivey Slaughter finished with a season-high 18 points with six boards, while Adut Bulgak notched a double-double with 17 points and 12 rebounds on 7-of-8 shooting.Â
For the season, Bulgak leads the ACC with five double-doubles, a total that is also tied for seventh in the nation. She is averaging team-best totals of 14.8 points and 9.9 rebounds this year. Maegan Conwright also bolsters the FSU offense with 14.3 points per game, and is second on the team with 3.0 assists per contest. Slaughter contributes 11.4 points per game, while Shakena Richardson is the team's leading play-maker with 4.1 assists per outing.Â
Florida State leads the all-time series, 3-1, including winning two in a row against the Owls. Temple's lone win in the series came on December 29, 1995, a 72-67 neutral site victory.
