PHILADELPHIA –Temple women's basketball dropped a heart-breaking two-point decision to Cincinnati, 55-53, in American Athletic Conference play on Saturday afternoon at the Liacouras Center in its annual Play4Kay game in support of breast cancer awareness..

The Owls fell to 12-13 overall and 6-8 in the conference, while the Bearcats improved to 11-14 overall and 4-10 in the league.  The game pitted former UConn assistant coaches Tonya Cardoza (Temple) and Jamelle Elliot (Cincinnati) against each other for the second time as head coaching rivals.

"I don't think we really showed up," Cardoza said. "We were just going through the motions.  We knew this wasn't going to be easy."

In the first half, Temple jumped out to a three-point lead, 7-4, before the Bearcats took a one-point edge, 8-7. The Owls closed the low-scoring half with a 10-3 run to take a six-point advantage into the locker room at halftime, 17-11.

"We were paying attention," Cardoza said of her team's first-half play. "They were missing some shots."

In the second half, the Owls led by right, 19-11 before the Bearcats used a 12-0 run to retake the lead, 23-19. The teams battled within five-points until TU went on a 12-3 run in the last six minutes to take a four-point lead, 47-43 after a three-pointer by sophomore Monaye Merritt (Philadelphia, Pa.). The Owls led by three, 53-50 with a minute left to play, but UC's Alyesha Lovett hit a three pointer, followed by two free throws on a one-and-one situation for the win. Temple had two opportunities in the last 25 seconds but couldn't convert.

"At one point, they just got hot," Cardoza said of Cincinnati. "They really wanted it, and they were hungry.  They kicked our butts."

Junior Rateska Brown (Alvin, S.C.) paced the Owls with 13 points.  Senior Shi-Heria Shipp (Salisbury, N.C.) followed with 12 points, including a perfect 6-for-6 shooting from the line.

Lovett led Cincinnati with 20 points.  Jeanise Randolph followed with 14 points, while Jasmine Whitefield added 11 points.

Overall, Temple out-rebounded Cincinnati, 38-36. The Bearcats shot 72 percent (18-25) from the field in the second half, compared to the Owls' 42 percent (13-31). TU's bench out-scored UC, 19-2.

Temple has a seven-day break before hosting USF on Saturday, Feb. 22 at 2 p.m. at the Liacouras Center.
