PORTLAND, Ore. - Freshman Miranda Litzinger took gold in junior women's foil while representing the eighth-ranked Owls at the 2014 Junior Olympic Fencing Championships. The championships are being held Feb. 14-17 in Portland, and Litzinger's teammates Alexandra Keft (epee) and Petra Khan (sabre) will also be competing.

Litzinger came out on top in a field of 126 competitors from all over the country in junior women's foil on the first day of competition, Friday, Feb. 14. In addition to her gold medal, Litzinger was able to put a medal around the neck of her head coach, Nikki Franke, pictured above.

The three athletes along with Franke were quite delayed in getting to Portland on Thursday, after their original flight was canceled. They were able to board a later flight but did not get in until after 11:00 p.m., with Litzinger having to fence early the next afternoon.

"Miranda fenced extremely well," said Franke. "She was very smart and really took advantage of her height. It was just a really good day, especially with all the drama of us trying to get here. With all that anxiety, she really did a very good job."
