PORTLAND, Ore. - The weekend was highlighted by a gold-medal finish by freshman Miranda Litzinger in foil at the 2014 Junior Olympic Fencing Championships, but two other Owls also competed in the other two weapons for Temple. Eighth-ranked Temple was represented by two freshmen and one sophomore at the championships.
Freshman Alexandra Keft won her pool and went on to place 15th in junior women's epee on Saturday, Feb. 15. Her field of competition included 152 other fencers. Keft missed making finals by just one touch, losing 13-12 to Pauline Hamilton from Colorado in the semifinals.
"Alex looked very good and fenced very smartly throughout the day," said Temple head coach Nikki Franke. "She continues to improve with every tournament."
On the final day of competition for Temple, sophomore Petra Khan placed 46th out of 105 fencers in junior women's sabre.
"Petra has been battling an upper respiratory infection all week did her best to fight through it," said Franke. "She was 4-2 in pools which gave her a bye to the round of 64. She fenced a hard bout against Illana Kamber from New Jersey but lost 15-14 to finish 46th."
As a team, Temple will return to action next weekend at its own Temple Invitational, set for Saturday, Feb. 22 at McGonigle Hall. The meet will get underway at 9:00 a.m., and admission is free.
