Temple Baseball Opens 2014 Season with 15-8 Win over Rider

WILSON, N.C. – Temple baseball opened up the 2014 season with a 15-8 win over Rider on Saturday afternoon. Seven players had multi-hit games to lead the Owls to a victory.
Temple scored five runs in the first inning to take the lead they would never relinquish. Robert Amaro, Michael D'Acunti, Josh Mason and Bobby Heitzman all had RBI hits in the inning.
Rider scored three runs in the bottom of the second to cut the Owls' lead to two, but Temple responded back in the next inning with two more runs.
Temple then added two more runs in the fifth inning to make their lead 10-6. The scoring did not stop there as Temple added two more runs the next inning.
Senior Matt Hockenberry earned the win for the Owls, going five innings with three earned runs and two strikeouts.
Phil Gianakos came out of the bullpen in the sixth inning and allowed two runs. Temple responded with a long solo home run by D'Acunti in the seventh to make it 13-8.
Derek Peterson and Amaro both had RBI hits in the seventh inning to push the lead to seven. Tim McCarthy took over on the mound in the eighth inning.
Freshman Patrick Vanderslice closed the game out in the ninth in his first collegiate appearance.
Mason finished with four hits and one RBI while Amaro had three hits and four RBIs in his debut for Temple after being at Virginia for four years.
Temple will play a doubleheader tomorrow against two different teams. The Owls will face UMass-Lowell at 10:00 a.m. and then face Rider again 45 minutes after the first game is completed.
