PISCATAWAY, N.J. –Temple women's basketball fell at No. 24 Rutgers, 67-58, in American Athletic Conference play on Wednesday evening at the RAC.
The Owls fell to 12-15 overall and 6-10 in the conference, while the Scarlet Knights improved to 21-6 overall and 12-4 in the league.
"I'm tired of these," head coach Tonya Cardoza said of her team's fourth straight loss. "This is like a broken record. We fight, fight, fight … We're in games. We don't have that killer instinct. Right now we keep coming up short."
In the first half, Rutgers jumped out to a quick 8-0 lead. Temple responded with six points before RU went on another run. The Scarlet Knights built their lead to as many as 10 points, 26-16, with 6:24 to go in the stanza. After cold shooting from behind the arc, junior Tyonna Williams (Fort Washington, Md.) nailed back-to-back three-pointers to bring the Owls within three, 31-28, at halftime.
In the second half, the Owls came within one, 33-32, before RU went on a 10-3 run midway through the half to go ahead by nine, 51-42. Temple used a 9-2 run to come within two, 57-55 with 2:49 to play, but the Scarlet Knights closed the game with a 10-3 run for the win.
Freshman point guard Feyonda Fitzgerald (Norfolk, Va.) led the Owls with 17 points, scoring 10 in the first half. Williams followed with 15 points, including three treys.
Tyler Scaife led Rutgers with 21 points, Kahleah Copper came off the bench for a double-double of 17 points and a game-high 12 rebounds, while Betnijah Laney had 11.
Overall, Rutgers out-rebounded Temple, 43-24. TU attempted 20 shots from long range, while RU only attempted one.
Temple makes its final road trip of the regular season with a game at UCF on Saturday, March 1. Tip-off at CFE Arena is set for 4 p.m.
