#8 Fencing Looks for 18th Straight NIWFA Championship This Saturday
2.27.14 | Women's Fencing
PHILADELPHIA - The eighth-ranked Temple fencing team finished the regular season with an impressive record of 28-8, and the Owls will head to West Point, N.Y., on Saturday, March 1 in search of their 18th straight National Intercollegiate Women's Fencing Association (NIWFA) Championship title. The championship is the 86th annual, and is oldest continuously-contested collegiate championship, in any sport, having begun in 1929.Â
The Owls successfully defended their title last year against 18 other teams, while also sweeping all three squad titles and earning two individual titles. Seniors Epiphany Georges and Chantal Montrose have taken the foil and epee titles, respectively, in all three years of their careers so far at Temple.
Twice this season, Temple went undefeated in dual meets. The Owls went 6-0 at the Philadelphia Invitational on Jan. 26, with two of those wins being over #7 Northwestern and #8 Penn. Two weeks later, Temple won the Duke Invitational with a 6-0 record. The epee and sabre squads took team trophies after not dropping a single match on the day.
Most recently, the Owls suffered a bit of disappointment when they finished 2-2 at their own Temple Invitational on Feb. 22. Temple defeated #10 St. John's as well as Duke, but could not match up with #1 Princeton and later lost by just a single point to #6 Penn State.
Temple has been facing top competition all season long. In mid-February, freshmen Miranda Litzinger won a gold medal in foil at the Junior Olympics in Portland. Teammate and fellow freshman Alexandra Keft placed 16th in epee, and sophomore Petra Khan placed 46th in sabre. Early in the season, Khan had an impressive showing at the North American Cup in Cleveland, placing 16th in Division I sabre out of over 120 competitors.
Montrose has been fencing well all season long, and her performance at the Northwestern Duals on Feb. 1-2 earned her the title of College Fencing 360 National Fencer of the Week.Â
Following the NIWFA Championship, the Owls will head to Lafayette College next weekend for the NCAA Regional Championships.
