Owls' Softball Drops Two One-Run Games on Day One of USF Under Armour Invitational

2.28.14 | Softball

CLEARWATER, Fla. – It was a battle of the Owls on the first day at the USF Under Armour Invitational as the Temple softball squad dropped two one-run games on Friday, February 28. The Temple Owls fell 1-0 to Florida Atlantic Owls in the first game of the day, before dropping a nine-inning affair to the Kennesaw State Owls, 5-4, in the nightcap.

Both teams collected six hits in the opening game, but it was FAU that made a first inning run stand up in the one-run victory. The Owls from Florida took advantage of one hit and one error in the opening frame to take a lead that they would never relinquish.

Temple stranded 10 runners in the contest, including two in the second, third and sixth innings. Six different players had singles for TU.

Kelsey Dominik (1-2) was the tough luck loser on the mound, going the complete 6.0 innings and striking out one. Amanda Wilson (3-1) picked up the win, going 5.0 innings, giving up four hits, two walks and striking out three. Samantha Messer got the save in 2.0 innings of work, allowing two hits and fanning three.

Against Kennesaw State, both teams scored once in the first to keep it even. The Cherry & White made it a 2-1 game in the third when Dominik hit an RBI double to left center, scoring Stephanie Pasquale, who had reached earlier on a fielders choice.

KSU got that run back, and one more, with solo runs in the fifth and sixth innings to go ahead 3-2. TU was down to its final out in the bottom of the seventh, down by one, when Julia Kastner was hit by a pitch with the bases loaded to plate the game tying run and knot it 4-4. Kennesaw State relief pitcher Amanda Henderson induced a strikeout for the final out of the frame and to send the game to extra innings.

Both teams plated a run in the eighth to send the game to another bonus inning. An error and a sacrifice fly allowed KSU to score in the top of the ninth, and Temple couldn't produce in the bottom of the frame, dropping the one run decision.

Dominik was 3-for-5 in the game with one RBI, while Pasquale and Sarah Prezioso each went 2-for-4 with one RBI.

Henderson earned the win in 2.2 innings of work, giving up one hit and one run, unearned, while striking out three. Starter Paige Mathews lasted 6.1 innings, allowing 10 hits and three runs, walking three and fanning seven. Amanda Gatt (1-1) took the loss, going the distance for TU, surrendering 11 hits and three earned runs, walking two and striking out three.

Temple (2-5) returns to play Saturday, March 1, with games against Loyola Marymount (11:45 a.m.) and Central Arkansas (4:30 p.m.).
