DALLAS, Texas - SMU jumped out to an early lead and Temple men's basketball never recovered, losing 75-52 to the Mustangs (18-5, 7-3) in American Athletic Conference action at Moody Coliseum on Thursday night.
Five players scored in double figures for SMU, led by Markus Kennedy and Shawn Williams with 14 points apiece. Kennedy, who hit 6-of-9 from the field, also led his team with nine rebounds.
Anthony Lee recorded his 10th double-double of the season for Temple with 12 points and 11 rebounds, while Dalton Pepper led all scorers with 15 points. Will Cummings put up 10 points and five assists for the Owls (6-15, 1-8).
SMU led by as many as 14 points in the first half, and extended its lead to 20 before the midway point of the second half. The Mustangs went on to pull ahead by as many as 27, with Temple never coming within fewer than 18.
The Owls got nothing to go from behind the arc for much of the first half, starting out 0-for-8 before hitting two of their final four attempts. They trailed by 10 near the midway point of the half, 18-8, and never came within fewer than six the rest of the period.
With 46 seconds remaining in the half, SMU took its largest lead of 14, 32-18 before Josh Brown made a layup for the halftime tally of 32-20. The Owls hit just 23.3 percent from the field in the half compared to 48.3 percent by SMU.
Pepper led Temple with seven points at the break, while Lee had five.
Quenton DeCosey hit back-to-back shots to start the second half for Temple, but it would not be a sign of a coming run.
Turnovers plagued the Owls over the coming minutes, and SMU took its first 20-point lead with 10:57 remaining. An 8-2 run near the four-minute mark briefly got Temple within 18 after having been down by 27, but the Owls could get no closer.
Temple will return to action on Sunday, Feb. 9 at Houston. That contest is set for a 2:00 p.m. (EST) tip-off on ESPNews.
