Chantal Montrose Named National Fencer of the Week by College Fencing 360

PHILADELPHIA - Temple senior women's epeeist Chantal Montrose has been named the national fencer of the week for Jan. 27-Feb. 2, 2014, as presented by CollegeFencing360.com. The honor is the first of Montrose's career. 

At the Northwestern Duals on Jan. 31-Feb. 1, Montrose turned in a record of 16-4 to help the ninth-ranked Owls go 9-3. Temple earned wins over #3 Notre Dame (14-13) and Stanford (18-9), while also tangling with an assortment of top opponents from #1 Princeton to #5 Ohio State.

Three of Montrose's four losses came down to the final touch (4-5) while the other was vs. Stanford three-time All-American Francesca Bassa (1-4). Montrose turned in impressive 5-0 win vs. Princeton veteran Susannah Scanlan, the 2013 NCAA runner-up and a member of the U.S. bronze-medal epee team at the 2012 Olympics. She also won 5-3 vs. Princeton's Isabel Ford, who placed 7th at the 2013 NCAA Mid-Atlantic/South Regional. Montrose nearly completed a sweep of Princeton, losing 4-5 to highly-rated newcomer Audrey Abend.

Montrose doubled up her opponents in total points (91-45) during the two-day tournament. She allowed each opponent only two touches in her sweep vs. Notre Dame, including wins over the All-America duo of Ashley Severson (5-2) and Nicole Ameli (3-2). Montrose had a winning record vs. Ohio State, including 5-4 victory over All-American Caroline Piasecka, and she also won 2-of-3 vs. Stanford, including a 5-3 bout vs. 2013 NCAA semifinalist Vivian Kong.

Her two wins vs. Northwestern included 5-3 bout vs. 2012 NCAA entrant Courtney Dumas. She allowed a total of six touches in her five other wins, including a sweep of Cleveland State (1-0 vs. Tufts and Cal Tech).
