PHILADELPHIA - On Tuesday afternoon, the NCAA Fencing Committee officially announced the field of 72 qualifiers for the 2014 Women's Fencing NCAA Championships. Representing the #7 Temple Owls will be three repeat qualifiers and one first-timer, with the four representing each class and each weapon.

Senior Chantal Montrose (epee) will be competing at the NCAA Championships for a second time after also representing Temple in her freshman year. Junior Tiki Kastor (sabre) will compete for a second straight year, as will sophomore Fatima Largaespada (foil). Freshman Rachael Clark (epee) rounds out the group and will be competing in her first nationals.

The four national qualifiers will compete March 20-23 at the French Field House in Cleveland, Ohio. The tournament is combined men's and women's fencing, with 144 competitors in all (24 representing each of three weapons for both men and women).

Montrose, Clark and Kastor were all selected following strong performances on Saturday at the NCAA Mid-Atlantic/South Regional where they reached the finals. Montrose and Clark finished fifth and sixth in epee, respectively, while Kastor placed eighth in sabre. As a freshman, Montrose placed 20th at the national meet.

Kastor was the team's top performer at the NCAA Championships in 2013, tying for 11th place in sabre and finishing 14th overall.

Largaespada received an at-large bid due to her finish at regionals (11th) as well as her performance throughout the season and her individual ranking. She placed 20th in foil last year as a freshman at the NCAA Championships.

The National Collegiate Men's and Women's Fencing Championships include individual events in each of the six weapons (men's foil, men's epee, men's sabre, women's foil, women's epee, women's sabre).

Fencers will compete in a round-robin format of five-touch bouts.  After the round-robin, the top-four finishers will fence in semifinal 15-touch bouts, with the winners fencing to determine first and second places, and the losers being awarded a tie for third place.

An institution's place finish in the championships will be based on points earned by each individual.  A team will be awarded one point for each victory by its student-athletes for the duration of the championships.
