Softball Offense Stymied in Two Losses at Houston

HOUSTON, Texas -Â The Temple softball team came up against a tough opponent in Houston, falling to the Cougars in two games on Saturday, both by the score of 8-0. The games were the first for either team in the American Athletic Conference slate.
In the opener, the Owls were held to just one hit by UH pitcher Diedre Outon. Senior Sarah Prezioso doubled to start the game, but that was the only hit the offense would get. Outon sat down 13 of the next 14 batters into the fifth inning, while her team staked itself to a 2-0 lead. The Cougars ended the game in the fifth with a six-run frame.
Amanda Gatt (2-2) took the loss, allowing six hits in 4.2 innings, issuing five walks and striking out one. Outon (6-5) picked up the win in 5.0 innings, surrendering the one hit, two walks and fanning two.
Houston pitcher Julana Shrum continued the solid effort for the host team, limiting TU to just two hits in the nightcap. Those hits came from Toni Santos with a single in the third, and Jess Mower in a pinch-hit appearance in the fifth.
The Cougars, meanwhile, scored three times in the first and another five in the third on their way to an 8-0 five-inning win.
Kelsey Dominik (4-5) went 4.0 innings and allowed eight hits while walking two and striking out one in the loss. Shrum (5-3) walked one and fanned four.
Temple (7-13, 0-2 American) will face Houston (15-10, 2-0 American) in the final game of the three-game series at 12 p.m. EST tomorrow. The start time has been moved up an hour due to the threat of inclement weather in the Houston area.
