PHILADELPHIA – Temple freshman Feyonda Fitzgerald (Norfolk, Va.) has been named to the 2014 All-Big 5 Second Team.
Fitzgerald, a 5-7 point guard, was the team leader all season. She averaged a team-best 12.9 ppg and 4.0 apg. A starter in all 30 games, Fitzgerald was a unanimous selection to the American Athletic Conference's All-Freshman Team as well as a second-team All-Conference selection.
Saint Joseph's, which captured the 2014 Big 5 team title, had two honorees—Most Improved Player, Sarah Fairbanks, and Scholar-Athlete, Erin Shields. Ivy League champion Penn captured the Player of the Year, Alyssa Baron, Rookie of the Year, Sydney Stipanovich, and Coach of the Year, Mike McLaughlin, honors.
Joining Baron on the All-Big 5 first team were Villanova's Devon Kane, La Salle's Alicia Cropper, and Natasha Cloud and Shields of Saint Joseph's. The second team included Fitzgerald, Kara Bonenberger of Penn, Fairbanks, and Caroline Coyer and Emily Leer, both of Villanova.
McLaughlin led the Quakers to their first Ivy League title and NCAA Tournament appearance in 10 years. His squad finished the regular season at 22-6 and went 2-2 in Big 5 action.
