Owls' Men's Tennis Defeats UConn 5-1
3.29.14 | Men's Tennis
MANCHESTER, Conn. - Things did not start strongly for the Temple men's tennis team on Saturday, March 29, as the Owls took on UConn at the Manchester Raquet Club, but the squad rallied to defeat the host team, 5-1. It was the first match for TU against an American Athletic Conference foe.
"This was a great win for us," said head coach Steve Mauro. "We were excited to play a conference team and we played extremely well in singles. This should put us in the right direction as we continue to prepare for the conference tournament."
The Huskies won the doubles point with victories at the first and second flights for the early 1-0 lead. That was
the only point UConn would score, however, as the Owls won four singles flights in straight-sets enroute to the 5-1 victory. It was Hernan Vasconez's 7-5, 6-4 win at No. 5 that clinched the match.
Temple (7-10) will play non-conference rival Quinnipiac at 11 a.m. tomorrow.
