Men's Tennis Easily Handles Visiting La Salle in 6-0 Victory
4.3.14 | Men's Tennis
PHILADELPHIA – Kristian Marquart did not drop a set against his La Salle opponent on Thursday morning, and his teammates all won in straight sets on the way to a 6-0 Temple men's tennis victory at the Legacy Youth Tennis & Education Center. TU improves to 8-10 with its fourth-straight win, while the Explorers fall to 6-8.
"This was a good win against a City 6 opponent," commented head coach Steve Mauro. "We're always happy to play against local teams to show that we are one of the top programs in Philadelphia."
The match started with singles, and the Owls made quick work of it so that playing doubles was unnecessary. Hicham Belkssir got the points started with a 6-0, 6-1 decision at the second flight. Filip Stipcic (6-1, 6-0) and Hernan Vasconez (6-1, 6-1) followed with their victories at No. 4 and No. 6, respectively.
Santiago Canete clinched the match with his 6-3, 6-0 decision at No. 5, before Marquart's decisive win at No. 3 made it a 5-0 match. Nicolas Paulus was the last to finish, winning his first set at the first flight 7-5 and leading 2-0 in the second before the match was retired.
"The guys came out strong and I'm pleased with the way they played today," said Mauro. "This win should give us momentum going in to our match at Navy Saturday."
Temple heads to Navy for a 2:30 p.m. match against the Midshipmen on Saturday, April 5.
