Volleyball Will Host Alumni Weekend Events and Tournament April 18-19

PHILADELPHIA - Temple volleyball has a big weekend of alumni events planned, including the 2014 Spring Alumni Tournament on Saturday, April 19 at McGonigle Hall. The Owls will also be hosting an Alumni Social/Fundraiser at Urban Saloon that night.

The tournament action begins on Saturday at 10:00 a.m. and will run through late afternoon. The teams participating in the tournament include Temple, Penn, La Salle, Delaware and Navy in addition to the Owls' Alumni Team.

On Friday, April 18, Temple will hold its annual Awards Banquet at Edberg-Olson Hall from 7:00 p.m. - 9:00 p.m. The annual banquet gives the team, family, friends and alumni the chance to gather and celebrate the successes from the past year. There were a number of impressive achievements by the Owls in 2013, as they finished with an overall record of 18-12 and placed sixth in the American Athletic Conference.

Senior Gabriella Matautia was named to the 2013 American Athletic Conference First Team after leading the team and ranking second in the league with 3.43 kills per set. Matautia finished her career with 1,248 kills. Senior Elyse Burkert also reached the 1,000-kill plateau for her career, finishing with 1,090 kills.

The Owls had a seven-match win streak early in the season (starting 7-1) and later won five straight matches early in the conference season (starting 6-1). Temple won the George Mason Patriot Invitational with 3-1 wins vs. Radford, Coppin State and George Mason. Matautia was named the MVP and Best Attacker, while Sandra Sydlik was named Best Setter.

The annual Alumni Tournament serves to bring together current and former players, and has helped forge a strong bond between the groups over the past few years. The connection between players past and present helds build the team unity as a whole across generations, and the weekend serves as both a great opportunity to bring people together and as a great way for Temple to end its spring season on a high note. Last year's tournament had nine teams and a large number of alums return to either show support or play for the Alumni Team.
