Softball Splits a Pair of Games on Friday

3.7.14 | Softball

WINTER HAVEN, Fla. – The Temple softball team dropped a heartbreaker to Sacred Heart, 3-2, in extra innings on Friday, March 7, before rebounding for a dominant 13-3 decision over Manhattan at the Rebel Spring Games. The Owls are 6-10 overall with two games remaining at the event.

It was a very evenly matched contest with the Pioneers, with neither team able to produce offensively through the first three innings. Sacred Heart finally got to TU pitcher Kelsey Dominik (3-4) in the fourth, scoring twice on two hits and a walk in the frame.

The Cherry & White responded with two of their own in the top of the fifth to tie the contest. After Devynne Nelons reached on an error to start the inning, Annie Marcopolus delivered an RBI triple to plate her for the first run. Two outs later, Leah Lucas drove Marcopolus in with a single to left field.

The Owls had an opportunity to add to their total in the top of the seventh, loading the bases with no outs, but Pioneers' pitcher Kacie Wentworth got out of the jam with a strikeout and a double play. After Sacred Heart failed to produce in the bottom of the frame, the contest went to extra innings.

TU could not score in the top of the frame, but it was not the case for SHU, which advanced the bonus runner with a sacrifice and then won the game on McKenna Wiegand's single to center field.

The Owls outhit Sacred Heart, 8-7, and each team missed opportunities with Temple stranded nine on the base path and the Pioneers leaving 10.

Dominik took the loss in 7.1 innings, walking four and striking out five. Wentworth also tossed a complete game for her second win of the season, walking just two and fanning seven.

Temple had no problem with offense against Manhattan, exploding for nine runs in the first inning and four more in the second to put the game out of reach early. The squad used six hits and one error in the first to build the healthy advantage. Both Lucas and Dominik recorded two singles and two RBI in the opening frame.

Brooklin White accounted for two of the runs in the second inning, belting her first homerun of the season which was a two-run shot.

Amanda Gatt (2-1) gave up two hits for the Owls in 4.0 innings, walking two and striking out three. Kate Bowen took the loss, surrendering nine runs on four hits in just 0.1 innings.

TU (6-10) closes out the Rebel Spring Games with contests against Akron (10 a.m.) and Saint Peter's (12 p.m.) on Saturday.
