Zierke's Two-Run Homerun Helps Softball to 5-3 Win Over Conference Foe Rutgers

4.13.14 | Softball

AMBLER, Pa. – In the rubber match of the three-game series with visiting Rutgers, the Temple softball team used some power hitting to defeat the visitors, 5-3, at Temple Softball Stadium on Sunday, April 13. TU improves to 13-19 overall, 3-6 in the American Athletic Conference, while Rutgers falls to 19-15, 3-6 AAC.

The Scarlet Knights jumped out to an early 1-0 lead in the second inning. Stephanie Huang (1-for-2) reached base via a fielder's choice and ended up all the way on third due to a throwing error by Temple. Danielle DeMarco (1-for-4) then hit a slow roller to second that allowed Huang to come in from third and give her squad the early edge.

The Owls broke through in the third when Brooklin White (1-for-3) led off with a double, and the very next batter, Devynne Nelons (1-for-3), switched places with her to make it a 1-1 contest. The next play was an interesting one and gave Temple a 2-1 lead. Julia Kastner (1-for-2) bunt singled on the first pitch of her at-bat. As the throw went to first in an attempt to get her out, Nelons made an attempt to score all the way from second. Nelons was thrown out at home, but Kastner, who had alertly moved up to second on the play at the plate, ending up coming all the way around to score when the Rutgers catcher tried to get her at second by throwing to the centerfielder, who was covering the bag. The errant throw went into an empty centerfield, allowing Kastner to cross the plate standing up.

TU added to the lead with a single run in the fifth inning on a Sarah Prezioso (2-for-3) solo homerun, and again with two runs in the sixth. Kelsey Dominik (1-for-3) collected a one-out single through the left side before Kaylyn Zierke (1-for-3) took the first pitch over the left centerfield wall for her first career homerun and a 5-1 lead for her team.

Those runs would prove critical as the Scarlet Knights mounted a comeback in the top of the seventh. A hit by pitch, fielding error and single loaded the bases for the visitors, and Chandler Howard (1-for-4) delivered an RBI single through the right side to cut it to 5-2. Temple pitcher Dominik (8-7) got a grounder to short that led to an out at the plate, and then worked back from a 3-0 count to strike out Alexis Durando (1-for-4) for the crucial second out of the inning. The next batter, Huang, patiently drew a walk to force in another run, but the next batter grounded out to first to give the Owls the 5-3 victory and the series win.

Dominik went all 7.0 innings, giving up seven hits and one earned run while walking two and striking out five. Alyssa Landrith (12-6) took the loss in 6.0 innings of work, allowing eight hits – five of those for extra bases – and four earned runs, walking one and fanning four.

Temple returns to play with a pair of non-conference games against Villanova on Tuesday, April 15, at Temple Softball Stadium, beginning at 3 p.m.
