MINNEAPOLIS, Minn. - Already an All-American for Temple fencing this season, junior Tiki Kastor has continued her winning ways. Kastor competed at the United States Fencing Association Division I National Championships in Minneapolis on April 12, and placed fifth in Division I women's sabre. The result was the best of her career at the Senior Nationals.
The tournament was only open to the top fencers in the country. In addition to fencing for national titles at this meet, Division I athletes are in the hunt to qualify for the 2014 Senior World Championships in Kazan, Russia - the most prestigious fencing tournament in the world besides the Olympic Games.
To reach the finals, Kastor was one of only two fencers to go undefeated in pool play and was seeded second going into the Direct Elimination table. She had a bye in the first round and then won her second round Direct Elimination bout against Kim Young by a score of 15-12 to advance to the Round of 8. There she fenced Sophie Keehan and lost 10-15 to finish in fifth place. The event was won by Celina Merza who defeated two-time Senior World team medalist Daria Schneider.
In late March, Kastor placed seventh in sabre at the NCAA Fencing Championships to earn All-America Second Team honors and help lead Temple to an eighth-place team finish.
