Fencer Chantal Montrose Named Philadelphia Inquirer Academic All-Area Performer of the Year

PHILADELPHIA – Temple senior fencer Chantal Montrose has been named the 2013-14 Philadelphia Inquirer Academic All-Area Women's At-Large Performer of the Year in the women's at-large category. In addition, Montrose is one of 11 student-athletes selected to the Philadelphia Inquirer Academic All-Area Women's At-Large team. The team was voted on by the sports information offices of the 28 institutions from the Philadelphia metropolitan area.
Montrose, who also was a member of the 2012-13 Philadelphia Inquirer Academic All-Area team, was the Owls' highest finisher at the 2014 NCAA Regionals by placing fifth in epee. She won the NIWFA Conference title in epee all four years, and qualified for the NCAA Championships for the second time of her illustrious career as a senior. At the national meet, Montrose placed 16th in helping lead Temple to an eighth-place finish among women's teams. In addition, Montrose was named the CollegeFencing360.com National Performer of the Week on Feb. 6, and has a career record of 178-122 in dual meets while at Temple. She is an advertising major who has made the Temple President's Honor Roll three times and boasts a 3.76 cumulative grade point average.
Temple had the highest number of student-athletes make the All-Area squad in the women's at-large category, placing five on the 11-person team. Joining Montrose from Temple are gymnasts Sylvie Borschel, Lauren Capone, Brittanie DeMeno and Heather Zaniewski. Penn fencer Wendy Zhao and Neumann ice hockey player Edie Brenning were repeat selections along with Montrose. Arcadia golfer Shannon Massott, Drexel squash standouts Kaitlyn Money and Kiran Vasudevan, and Penn fencer Sarah Parmacek round out the 2013-14 At-Large team.
