PROVIDENCE, R.I. – The Temple women's tennis team has received the seventh seed at the inaugural American Athletic Conference Women's Tennis Championship, held on April 17-20 at the Varsity Courts on the campus of host USF. The Owls will face 10-seed UCF at 9 a.m. on Thursday, April 17.
TU has posted an 8-10 record through the regular-season this spring, going 1-3 against conference teams. The Cherry & White ended the year winning four of their last five matches, including the final three of the season that featured a 4-3 win over No. 9 UConn. Temple has never faced UCF before.
The Owls are led by a trio of upperclassmen with winning records in singles play, while also relying on the steady play of two freshmen this season. Senior Jordan Batey (11-8), junior Rebecca Breland (10-7) and sophomore Minami Okajima (11-9) have all had solid seasons for TU. Breland and Okajima have really turned it up as of late, each winning their final three matches of the season.
Rookies Dina Karina and Anais Nussaume have made a name for themselves early in their careers. Karina has won three-straight singles matches and carries an 11-6 overall record into the championship. Nussaume is 13-7 overall in singles play.
Breland and Karina have teamed up to post a 7-6 doubles record with a 5-4 mark at the first flight. In addition, senior Alicia Doms and Okajima paired up to go 5-2 in doubles action at the third flight. Doms leads the squad with an overall 13-7 doubles record, also going 3-0 at No. 3 with classmate Yana Mavrina.
Houston earned the top seed after a breakthrough season, and were the highest ranked conference school in the most recent ITA rankings at No. 32. The Cougars have been the highest ranked team in the conference for eight straight weeks after first entering the national rankings on February 11 and earning their best team ranking in school history by peaking at No. 21. Despoina Vogasari, who led The American with three Player of the Week honors, is ranked No. 95 in the singles rankings for the Cougars.
Memphis is the number two seed, coming in at No. 39 in the ITA rankings. The Tigers were 13-8 in the regular season, including a 3-1 conference mark with victories over UCF, Louisville and SMU. The Tigers had a league-best four different players win conference Player of the Week honors.
Host USF garnered the third seed, ranking just behind the Tigers at No. 41. Senior Loreto Alonso, who won two Player of the Week awards in a three-week span in March, is ranked No. 79 in the nation. The Bulls will face sixth-seeded SMU at noon on Friday. The Mustangs were 10-11 in the regular season, finishing the year with four straight home wins.
The four seed versus five seed matchup, also contested at noon on Friday, will feature No.4 Louisville and No. 5 Rutgers. Louisville, 12-4 on the year, is ranked No. 56 by the ITA, and its doubles pair of seniors Julia Fellerhoff and Rebecca Shine is the No. 19 duo in the country. Rutgers will head to Tampa after a 15-4 season, with a 3-1 conference mark. The Cardinals defeated the Scarlet Knights in their earlier meeting at home by a 6-1 margin.
Thursday will feature a pair of matches at 9 a.m., with the top two seeds awaiting the winners. The first match pits No. 7 seed Temple against No. 10 seed UCF. The Owls won eight matches, including four of their last five, while the Knights claimed six victories including two of their last three. The winner of that match will face top-seeded Houston on Friday morning.
Thursday's other matchup is between No. 8 seed Cincinnati and No. 9 seed UConn. The Bearcats were 9-13 on the regular season, while the Huskies were 8-11. On Feb. 28 the Bearcats defeated UConn 6-1. The winner of Friday's match will take on No. 2 seed Memphis.
