PROVIDENCE, R.I.
The Temple men's tennis team has been seeded sixth at the inaugural American Athletic Conference Men's Tennis Championship, held on April 18-20 at The Racquet Club of Memphis. The Owls will face third-seeded and nationally-ranked Louisville, the No. 39 team in the country, at 12 p.m. on Friday, April 18.

TU has posted an 11-10 record through the regular-season this spring, closing out the year on a tear with wins in its final seven matches. This will be the first-ever meeting between Temple and the Cardinals.

The Owls are led by a trio of sophomores in singles play, while also relying on the steady play of their two junior team captains. Hicham Belkssir (20-14), Santiago Canete (17-15) and Nicolas Paulus (19-14) have all put together impressive seasons in their second years. Canete ended the year strong, winning seven of his final 10 matches.

Junior Kristian Marquart rebounded from a slow start to win seven of his final nine matches and boast a 14-8 record, while classmate Hernan Vasconez has won his last five for a 16-16 record entering the championship.

The duo of Belkssir and Paulus lead the squad with a 9-7 doubles record, going 2-0 when playing at No.1 and 3-1 at the third flight. Paulus has put together an overall doubles mark of 15-11 this season.

The host Memphis Tigers earned the No. 1 seed, and will receive a bye into Saturday's semifinal. The Tigers were the highest ranked team in the ITA rankings, moving up to No. 21 in the latest rankings. Memphis is led by junior Connor Glennon, ranked No. 62 in the nation in singles, and the doubles duo of Joe Salisbury and David O'Hare, who are No. 8 in the nation. Memphis went 13-4 in the regular season and 3-0 versus conference foes.

USF earned the number two seed after a 15-6 regular season. After a loss to the Tigers over the weekend, the Bulls finished just behind Memphis in the ITA rankings at No. 26. USF is led by Roberto Cid, who won conference Player of the Week honors a league-best three times, and is ranked No. 43 in the nation. Cid and partner Sash Gozun are also the nation's No. 41 doubles squad. The Bulls will face No. 7 seed UConn in the first match of the Championship at 9 a.m. central time on Friday. The Huskies finished 8-11 overall, winning their last two matches to close the year.

Louisville is the number three seed, finishing the year at No. 39 in the ITA rankings. The Cardinals earned a top-three seed at their conference tournament for the 15th straight season, and won 20 matches this season. Their first round matchup will be against the sixth-seeded Temple Owls at noon central Friday. The Owls enter the tournament hot, winning their last seven matches of the year to finish 11-10.

The No. 4 vs. No. 5 matchup will feature the fourth-seeded UCF Knights against the fifth seeded SMU Mustangs, with top-seeded Memphis awaiting the winner. UCF finished the regular season No. 62 in the ITA rankings and was 12-8 overall, despite dropping both conference matches. SMU concluded the regular season at 10-12 and will face its first conference foe of the year in the Knights.

The 2014 Men's Tennis Championship will take place April 18-20 at The Racquet Club of Memphis. The seven schools sponsoring men's tennis will compete in a total of six matches to determine the champion.
