WASHINGTON, D.C. - Despite an evenly-played second half, the deficit was too great for Temple lacrosse and the Owls (6-9, 3-3) dropped a 13-6 decision at Georgetown (8-7, 5-1) on Saturday afternoon. Temple has one regular season BIG EAST game remaining at Rutgers on April 25, and the Owls are vying for one of two spots left in the BIG EAST Tournament.
Georgetown will serve as the tournament host on May 1 and 3. Louisville and Georgetown have clinched berths with five wins apiece, while Connecticut, Temple, Villanova and Rutgers are all in the mix for the two remaining spots.
Sophomore Nicole Tiernan recorded her fourth hat trick of the season with three goals to lead Temple on Saturday. Senior Jaymie Tabor added two, and freshman Carly Demato also scored for the Owls.
Corinne Etchison and Kristen Bandos led the Hoyas with four goals apiece. Bandos scored three of her goals over a one minute and 40 second stretch late in the first half to help the Hoyas pull away.
Tabor was the first to score in the game before a 3-0 Georgetown run, but Tiernan's first goal had the Owls within one, 3-2 near the midway point of the first half. From that point, only Demato's goal interrupted Georgetown's run the rest of the half, as the Hoyas outscored Temple 7-1 to take a 10-3 lead at halftime.
Draw controls were an obstacle for the Owls in the first half, as they recorded just three of them to Georgetown's 11.
The Owls' defense was much stronger in the second half, as Temple allowed just three more goals. Georgetown scored only once in the final 25 minutes, but two more goals for Tiernan were the only ones the Owls were able to put on the board in that stretch.
Temple's final regular season game at Rutgers is set for 7:00 p.m. on Friday, April 25.
