Softball Suffers Extra Inning Loss at Penn
4.2.14 | Softball
PHILADELPHIA - Temple and Penn played bonus softball on Wednesday, April 2, going to extra innings in a single game at Penn Park. The Quakers came out on top of a 4-3 eight-inning affair for the cross-city rivals.
Penn got on the board first with a run in the bottom of the third. Two singles and a walk loaded the bases for Alexis Sargent, whose fielder's choice to shortstop brought the first run across.
The host team struck again in the fourth, plating two runs in the frame. Another walk and single put runners on and, after Kanani Datan's sacrifice got both in scoring position, Elysse Gorney delivered a two-run single to left field to put her team on top, 3-0.
The Owls got the bats going in the top of the sixth as Sarah Prezioso led off the frame with a single up the middle, and Annie Marcopolus sent the very next pitch to the right centerfield wall for a double that scored Prezioso from first. One out later and a walk later, Kaylyn Zierke drilled a ball to the leftfield fence, bringing in Marcopolus to make it 3-2. Brooklin White then stepped in and hit a sacrifice fly to left that scored pinch-runner Gina Pellechio and tied the game at 3-3.
Neither team could produce through the rest of regulation, and the game headed to extra innings. Sargent, on in relief of starter Courtney Cuzick, issued a walk to the leadoff TU batter in the top of the eighth but went on to sit the next three batters down in order.
With one out in the bottom of the frame, Penn's Leah Allen collected her third hit of the day with a slow roller to shortstop. Allen stole second and one out later Gorney walked to put two runners on. Kayla Dahlerbruch then stepped in a sent a single down the right field line to drive in the game-winning run.
Sargent (4-2) got the win in 2.0 innings of relief work, walking two and striking out four while allowing no hits. Cuzick went 6.0 innings for the Quakers, giving up four hits, three runs, three walks and fanning four. Kelsey Dominik (5-6) took the loss in 7.2 innings of action, giving up nine hits, six walks and striking out three.
The Owls (9-15) are back in action this weekend when they travel to Memphis for a three-game series against the Tigers. The American Athletic Conference series starts with a 2 p.m. EST doubleheader on Saturday, April 5.
