Baseball Takes Weekend Series Against Cincinnati with 7-2 Win

CAMDEN, N.J. – Temple baseball defeated Cincinnati 7-2 at Campbell's Park on Sunday afternoon to take the weekend series after beating Cincinnati in the first game on Friday. Temple improves to 9-15, 4-5 while Cincinnati drops to 11-18, 2-7.

Temple scored five unanswered runs starting in the fifth inning to get the win. Starter Ryan Kuehn (2-1) earned the win, going six innings with only one earned run. Kuehn walked one batter while striking out three. He also gave up only four hits.

Temple jumped out to a 2-0 lead in the first inning. With two outs, Bobby Heitzman doubled to right center and went to third on a wild pitch. Robert Amaro singled to left center to knock in Heitzman. Amaro was then able to score when Michael D'Acunti doubled to right center.

The Bearcats tied up the game with one run each in the third and fifth.

The Owls took the lead for good in the fifth inning. Josh Mason singled through the right side to lead off the inning. Reyn Sugai advanced Mason to second on a sacrifice bunt to third base. Heitzman singled to left center that allowed Mason to score standing up.

The lead for Temple was increased to two runs in the seventh. Mason went to second on a fly ball that was dropped by the right fielder. Sugai once again moved Mason over to third with a sacrifice bunt and also got on base on a fielding error by the first baseman. With one out, Derek Peterson hit a grounder to the shortstop, but he was able to beat the throw by the second baseman for a double play to allow Mason to score.

Three insurance runs were added in the eighth. David Hall led off with a single through the right side and went to second on a stolen base. Andrew Nist then walked. Josh Mason then reached on a throwing error on a sacrifice bunt to the pitcher. Sugai singled through the right side to score Hall. Heitzman hit a deep enough sacrifice fly that allowed Nist to score from third. Mason then scored on a sacrifice fly by Derek Peterson to right field.

Tim McCarthy and Zach Batchelor combined for three scoreless innings of relief. McCarthy allowed only one hit in the seventh with two strikeouts. Batchelor got the final six outs for his second save of the series and fifth of the season, striking out two hitters as well. Batchelor is now tied for seventh in career saves for Temple with six total. He is also tied for fourth of the season record for saves.

Seven players had hits for Temple. Both Heitzman and D'Acunti had two hits. Heitzman and Peterson had two RBI in the game.

Up next for the Owls is a non-conference game on Tuesday at 3:00 p.m. against Monmouth, the first of four games against them.
