CAMDEN, N.J. – Temple baseball knocked off No. 16 Houston 4-1 on Thursday evening at Campbell's Field. Temple improves to 14-29, 9-13 while Houston drops to 40-14, 13-9.
With the win Temple clinches a bid in the American Athletic Conference Tournament next week in Clearwater, Fla. The Owls have now knocked off two ranked teams this season after beating No. 5 Louisville last Saturday 4-2.
Temple took advantage of an error at first base to score three runs in the first inning, and that was all that the Temple pitching staff needed this game. Bobby Heitzman and Derek Peterson singled with one out. Michael D'Acunti hit a grounder to first that went off the first baseman's glove and into right field, allowing Heitzman and Peterson to both score. Robert Amaro then singled to move D'Acunti to third, where he scored on a single up the middle by Jimmy Kerrigan.
The Owls added another run in the third. Peterson led off the inning with a single to center field and stole second base. With two outs Kerrigan provided another RBI single to right center to knock in Peterson.
Matt Hockenberry (5-5) had another solid outing for Temple as he picked up the win. Hockenberry went six innings, allowing only three hits, one walk and one unearned run while striking out four batters.
Temple's bullpen then sealed the deal with three scoreless innings of relief. Connor Staskey retired the side in the seventh and had one strikeout. Zach Batchelor recorded the first two outs in the eighth but then allowed three straight batters to reach base. Pat Krall was called on once again and produced a pop up to the shortstop Peterson to end the inning. Krall then retired the side in the ninth to pick up his second save of the season.
Six Owls had hits in the game as they outhit the Cougars 11-5. Amaro had two while Kerrigan and Peterson had three.
Temple will look to win the series tomorrow at 3:00 p.m. at Campbell's Field as Patrick Vanderslice will be the starting pitcher.
