2014 Temple Volleyball Schedule

PHILADELPHIA
– Fourth-year head coach Bakeer Ganes has announced the 2014 schedule for Temple volleyball, which will have the Owls competing for a second season in the competitive American Athletic Conference. The non-conference schedule once again includes the Temple Invitational in early September which will feature teams from Princeton, Charlotte and Holy Cross.

"We were able to put together a very challenging schedule for 2014," said Ganes. "We are very motivated to play some great teams in our non-conference schedule, which will get us ready to compete in a very competitive American Athletic Conference. This is definitely the toughest non-conference schedule since our arrival at Temple. It is very exciting to see this program grow and to see this team compete at a higher level every year. We are looking forward to our upcoming season and cannot wait to get started this summer."

The Owls begin the season August 30-31 at the Syracuse Invitational. Along with facing ACC member and host Syracuse, Temple will match-up with Niagara and Delaware State. In 2013, the Owls defeated both of the other visiting teams in non-conference matches. The match against Niagara will be Temple's first of the season, set for 1:30 p.m. on Saturday, Aug. 30.

The next weekend will see the Owls return home to host the annual Temple Invitational. Three matches will take place on both Friday, Sept. 5 and Saturday, Sept. 6. The Owls will play UNC Charlotte at 6:00 p.m. in the third match of day one, and will play both Princeton (1:00 p.m.) and Holy Cross (4:30 p.m.) on the second day. UNC Charlotte is a former foe from the Atlantic 10 Conference and now competes in Conference USA.

Temple's third tournament takes the Owls to the LIU Invitational to face tough competition in LIU Brooklyn, Boston College and Northern Kentucky. Host LIU went undefeated in the Northeast Conference (NEC) each of the past two seasons to advance to the NCAA Tournament, and finished the 2013 season with a record of 23-8. Boston College will be Temple's second ACC foe of the young season.

The Owls are the reigning champs of the Big 5 Tournament from 2012, as the tournament was not held in its traditional form a year ago. The 2014 season will mark its return, as Temple, Penn, La Salle and Villanova play in round-robin format at Penn on Sept. 19-20. The Owls will face La Salle in the first match on Friday at 4:00 p.m., and will play Villanova at 10:00 a.m. on Saturday. The tournament concludes with the match-up between Temple and host Penn on Saturday night at 7:00 p.m.

The American Athletic Conference slate has a new look this season with the addition of East Carolina, Tulane and Tulsa. Rutgers and 2013 champion Louisville have both departed for other conferences. The additions are strong ones, as Tulane comes in after finishing at 28-4 last season with an RPI of 54. Tulsa went 24-7 with an even stronger RPI of 37. The two teams played each other in the Conference USA semifinals, with Tulane coming out on top and eventually falling in the championship match to UTSA.

The Owls begin conference play on Wednesday, Sept. 24 at UConn, and will play three more matches on the road before the home opener on Friday, Oct. 10 against Cincinnati. Six of Temple's final eight league matches will be played at home. In total, Temple will play 13 matches in Pearson-McGonigle Hall including its home tournament.

The American's regular season champion will earn the conference's automatic berth in the NCAA Tournament.

Temple finished 18-12 overall in 2013, marking the Owls' second straight season with a winning percentage of .600 or better. They were picked to finish seventh in the Preseason American Athletic Conference Coaches Poll, and bettered that spot by one, finishing sixth in the standings at 9-9. The Owls had a seven-match win streak early in the season (starting 7-1) and later won five straight matches early in the conference season (starting 6-1).
