USF Takes Two From Softball on Senior Day, 8-0 and 3-1

5.3.14 | Softball

AMBLER, Pa. – The Temple softball team finally got back on the field at Temple Softball Stadium on Saturday, May 3, taking on American Athletic Conference foe USF. The visiting Bulls won the first game of the doubleheader 8-0, before hanging on for a 3-1 victory in the second.

In game one, USF pitcher Sara Nevins (25-7) brought her best stuff and tossed a perfect game for the Bulls. She went 5.0 innings in the run-rule shortened contest, striking out nine of the 15 batters she faced.

The USF offense was there to support her, scoring three times in both the first and third innings for a 6-0 lead and then getting one each in the fourth and fifth to end the contest early.

Kelsey Dominik (9-11) took the loss in 3.2 innings of work, allowing eight hits and seven runs, walking three and fanning three. Jessica Mahoney pitched 1.1 innings of relief, giving up three hits and one run while fanning two.

It was the visitors striking first in the nightcap as well when Monica Santos led off the third inning with a homerun over the centerfield fence. USF added two more in the top of the sixth courtesy of a sacrifice fly and an RBI double.

The Owls finally got on the board with a Leah Lucas leadoff homer to centerfield in the bottom of the sixth to cut the score to 3-1. But Nevins, who had come on in relief in the third, struck the next batter out, got a fly out and another strikeout to prevent any further damage.

Two hits and an error in the top of the seventh had the Bulls threatening to widen the score, but relief pitcher Kylie Kristovich got out of a bases loaded jam with a line out and strikeout to end the inning.

TU had hope in the bottom of the frame when Toni Santos reached on an error to bring up the team's best hitter, Sarah Prezioso, with two outs. But Nevins had Prezioso's number all day and the ace struck her out swinging to end the game.

Amanda Gatt (4-6) got the loss in 6.0 innings of working, surrendering six hits and three runs, walking two and fanning five. Kristovich tossed 1.0 inning, giving up two hits. Erica Nunn started the game for USF but lasted just 2.2 innings, giving up a single, walking two and striking out five. Nevins got the win in 4.1 innings of work, allowing two hits, one run, one walk and fanning seven.

After the games, the Owls held their annual end of year banquet, presenting senior Sarah Prezioso with the Most Valuable Player Award and senior Brooklin White with the Heart and Guts Award.

Temple (15-27, 5-12) and USF (38-14, 12-5) will meet for another pair of games on Sunday, May 4, beginning at 12 p.m. Between games, members of the 2004 Temple softball team will be recognized for the ten year anniversary of their Atlantic 10 title and NCAA appearance.
