Margo Britton Wins Conference Title in the Shot Put With a School-Record Mark at the American Championships

TAMPA, Fla. - Junior Margo Britton won the first American Athletic Conference title for Temple women's track & field, taking first in the shot put on Saturday evening with a mark that broke her own school record in the event. 

Britton's throw of 16.07m (52-08.75) was one of 12 personal bests recorded by the women's team on the second day of the conference championships, and earned 10 points for the Owls. Her distance was more than two feet past her old record, set in 2012 at the Penn Relays. She bested 17 other competitors in the shot put and did so with her final throw of six attempts.

Also earning points for the women's team was junior Kiersten LaRoche, who placed seventh overall in the heptathlon with a personal-best score of 4,378 points. 

LaRoche competed in seven events over the past two days, and earned a win in the heptathlon long jump with a mark of 5.66m. She also ran a personal-best time of 2:28.02 in the 800m to take fourth in that event.

Senior Anna Pavone had a strong showing in the 1500m run prelims, and qualified for Sunday's final with a 13th-place time of 4:40.04.

In the 400m hurdles, junior Kaitlyn McSurdy finished 10th in the prelims with personal-best time of 1:03.78.

Four of Temple's five competitors in the 200m dash prelims ran personal-bests. Sophomore Demeshia Davis was the Owls' top finisher in the event, placing 17th in 24.92. Behind her was freshman Bionca St. Fleur in a personal-best 24.95, junior Michelle Davis Timothy in a personal-best 24.97, freshman Jimma McCluskey in a personal-best 25.17 and junior Hollis Coleman in a personal-best 25.26.

In the 100m dash prelims, sophomore Courtney Mitchell was Temple's top finisher in a personal-best time of 12.42 to place 21st. St. Fleur also ran a PR in that event with a time of 12.47.
Davis Timothy was another runner to earn two personal-bests for the day, taking 15th in the 400m dash prelims with a time of 56.19. Freshman Kenya Gaston also set a personal-best in that event, finishing 19th in 56.60.

Competition concludes on Sunday, with Temple's events set to include the 4x100m relay, the 4x400m relay, discus, high jump, triple jump and the finals of the 1500m run.
