Men’s Crew Advances Three Boats at 2014 Dad Vail Regatta

PHILADELPHIA – Temple men's crew won two heats and advanced three boats after the first day of action at the 2014 Aberdeen Dad Vail Regatta on Friday.
The varsity 8+, comprised of Dante Romeo (coxswain), Charles Anderson (stroke), Brian Riefsnyder (seat-7), Fergal Barry (seat-6), Dan Sipzner (seat-5), Josha Kuzo (seat-4), Evan Hammond (seat-3), Thomas Robbins (seat-2), and Ryan Dartnell (bow), finished second in its heat in a time of 11:19.849 just two seconds behind winner Purdue (11:17.849). The Owls advance to Saturday's semifinal at 10:25 a.m.
"We gave it our all," Dartrnell said after the race. "We didn't pull through today. We'll be ready tomorrow. It's great to have your best friends in your boat. It's going to be a fight. You can't count anyone out."
The varsity 4+ boat, comprised of Kyle Powell (coxswain), Nick Matousch (stroke), Joseph Calendo (seat-3), Muhammad Abdulakafarov (seat-2), and Rich Ridgway (bow), took to the water first, finishing fifth in its heat in 6:59.637 behind winner Georgia Tech.
The novice 4+, including Kati Jordan Funck (coxwain), Dylan McCreavy (stroke), TJ Kuhar (seat-3), Robert Byrne (seat-2), and Vittorio DiPentino (bow), captured the Owls' first win on the day, taking first in a time of 6:52.975, seven second better than second-place Clarkson (6:59.455). TU advanced to Saturday's semifinal at 7:51 a.m.
The second varsity 8+ boat, comprised of Truman Levine (coswain), Conor Murphy (stroke), Pat Woodruff (seat-7), Bryan Berry (seat-6), Steve Lindeman (seat-5), Zephyr Dippel (seat-4), Gary Wielgus (seat-3), Hunter Devine (seat-2), and Mario DiCarlo (bow), captured a six-second victory (5:50.599) over the field and advanced to Saturday's semifinal at 8:39 a.m.
Action resumes on the Schuylkill River on Saturday, May 10. Temple's first race is the varsity four at 7:71 a.m. Saturday's schedule is listed below. Head coach Gavin White will be presented with the Matthew J. Ledwith Coaches' Award at 11:45 a.m., while Temple's 25th Anniversary Crew (1989) will be recognized at Noon.
6ABC will televise Saturday's finals LIVE with host Matt O'Connell and four-time Dad Vail champion Ferdinand Bergen (Temple '01). Coverage begins at 1 p.m.
