PHILADELPHIA – Temple women's soccer kicks off its 2014 season this weekend with games at Binghamton on Friday at 7:00 pm and Mount St. Mary's at home on Sunday at 3:00 pm.  Temple will try to top last season's successful start to the season when it won the first four games of the season for the best ever start in program history.

Coming off its inaugural season in the American Athletic Conference and Seamus O'Connor's first season as head coach, Temple women's soccer sets out for big improvements in the 2014 campaign.  Last season the Owls finished 6-12-1, 1-8-0 to finish ninth in the American.  The Owls were one of the youngest teams in the conference with only four upperclassmen and 14 newcomers.  While increasing the scoring production by 70% from 2012, the team featured balanced scoring as nine different players scored a goal and three tied for the team lead with three goals.  With nine starters and 18 letterwinners returning, the Owls will have 88% (15/17) of their goal scoring back for the 2014 season.

The coaching staff will feature a new assistant in Keith Cappo.  He takes over the spot left by Kerry Smith who became the head coach at Washington College.  Cappo brings coaching experience from the youth, high school, collegiate and amateur levels of men's and women's soccer with him.  He has served as an assistant for O'Connor at Chestnut Hill College and with the Philadelphia Liberty FC of the Women's Premier Soccer League.  Dominic Mangoni was also promoted to assistant coach after serving as a volunteer coach last season.  Mangoni has over 30 years of experience at the club, high school and college levels.

O'Connor has shown once again he isn't afraid to take his team on the road for the non-conference.  The Owls will play nine of 10 non-conference games away from Ambler Sports Complex.  After facing Mount St. Mary's on Sunday, the Owls will not return home for a game until October 2nd against conference newcomer Tulsa.  In the nine game span between home games, the Owls will take on city rivals La Salle, Drexel and Saint Joseph, play in the Cornell Tournament against St. Bonaventure and Cornell, travel to Rider and Delaware and open conference play at Cincinnati and East Carolina.  Five of the final eight games will be at home as Temple will take on Tulsa, Memphis, UCF, USF, and Uconn at home while traveling to Delaware State, SMU and Houston.

Defenseman Alyssa Kirk will be the only senior on the team as the Owls will have 11 juniors, 10 sophomores and six freshmen.  Kirk tied for the team lead with three goals last season.  Kirk will look to provide leadership as a team captain in her final season as an Owl.  The other three captains are juniors Erin Lafferty, Paige Rachel and Kaylee Harner.  Harner and Lafferty served as captains last season and will use that experience to be even better leaders for the team this year.  Lafferty, who has started all 39 games in her career, anchored the defense last season and played the second most minutes on the team.  She scored three goals including a game-winner in double overtime at Loyola to tie for the team lead in goals.  Harner, a defenseman, was limited to only 13 games, all starts, and missed five conference games in October.  She scored the game-winning goal against Delaware State in the second game of the season. Rachel, one of the top midfielders returning, tore her ACL in a scrimmage and will miss the entire season.  She started 13 games after missing the beginning of the season with an injury.

One spot is vacant in the defensive unit after Karly O'Toole graduated last season.  The position however might be the deepest position on the team.  In addition to Harner, Kirk and Lafferty, defensemen Taylor Trusky and Paula Jurewicz return as starters.  Both started all 19 games last season.  After transferring from Pitt, Trusky was fourth in minutes played and assisted on two goals.  Jurewicz has started 37 games in her career and contributed one assist last year.  Morgan Elliot and Kelly Moran also return from last season's defensive squad.  Elliot started the first four games of the season before breaking her leg that ended her season.  Moran played in 15 games, including one start and also has the versatility to play as a midfielder.  Cait Jackson, one of eight newcomers on the team, will try to provide even more depth at the position and compete for playing time.

Junior Kelly Farrell leads the forward position for the Owls.  Farrell, named a preseason second team all-conference by College Madness, tied for the team lead in scoring with two goals and three assists for seven points in 14 games started.  Junior Brendi Ernst and sophomore Morgan Evans return after lettering last season.  Ernst played in 15 games last year and registered her first point in a win at Mount St. Mary's.  Sophomore Kayla Cunningham and freshmen Gabriella McKeown and Katerina Stavrakis will attempt to be impactful newcomers to the team.  Cunnigham transferred to Temple to play soccer and be closer to family after playing field hockey at Indiana last year.  She scored 166 goals with 82 assists in her career at Whitehall High School.  McKeown broke Lower Cape May Regional High School's career scoring record for goals with 90 and single season goal record with 34 her junior year.

Junior Shannon Senour is the only returning starter at the midfielder position.  Senour started 13 games last season and had 15 shots with seven on goal.  Five returning players and four newcomers will look to replace Rachel's production.  Sophomore Ingrid Mello started in seven games and scored three goals in her first season at Temple, including two in her debut in a win at NJIT.  Sophomore Elaine Byerley played in all 19 games last season with five starts and scored a goal against Louisville and in a win against Binghamton.  Sophomore Taylor Matsinger started seven games in her freshman season and had 11 shots.  Junior Jordyn Richman has appeared in 13 games in her career.  Sophomore Megan Sullivan played in three games last season.  Junior Gina DiTaranto comes over to Temple after playing at Delaware the past two years.  Freshmen Delia Trimble, Elana Falcone and Victoria Dutille will contend for playing time in their first season.  All three freshmen started at least three years at their respective high schools.  Falcone holds the career scoring record at Scranton Preparatory School with 84 goals and 31 assists.

Junior Shauni Kerkhoff returns in net off of one of the best seasons by a Temple goalkeeper and is on pace to become one of the most decorated goalkeepers in program history.  Playing every single minute in net in 2013, Kerkhoff had seven shutouts with a 1.34 goals allowed average.  After two seasons, she ranks seventh in the most saves by a Temple goalie (158), first in save percentage (.823), and first in goals against average (1.14).  Sophomore Madison Hileman and Emily Doherty return to back up Kerkhoff.

BINGHAMTON NOTES...
Binghamton returns seven starters and 19 total letterwinners from last season squad that went 8-8-2, 3-4-1 and advanced to the America East Tournament, the eighth straight for the Bearcats.  Rebecca Raber, Gaby Gold and Connie Gormley lead the team as the captains.  Raber and Gormley were all-conference selections last season. Raber started all 18 games and scored three goals and three assists while Gormley anchored the defense and contributed one assist.  Gold played in 13 games last season with four starts, holding down a 1.00 goals allowed average and a .800 save percentage.  Leading scorer Stephani Church returns after scoring five goals with one assist for 11 points.

MOUNT ST. MARY'S NOTES...
Mount St. Mary's returns six starters and 14 letterwinners from last season's team that went 4-10-3.  The Mountaineers have to replace there three top scorers though as Emma Blair and Alicia Mirando are the scoring leaders among returnees with two goals apiece.  The Mount utilizes a two-goalkeeper system.  Rachel Bourne and Vicky Cocozza will split the time.  Bourn started 14 games with a goals allowed average of 1.29 with 54 saves.  Cocozza played 61 more minutes than Bourn and made 70 saves while allowing 20 goals for a 2.18 goals allowed average.

ALL-TIME SERIES...
Temple has won all three matchups with Mount St. Mary's. The Owls picked up wins in 1996 and 1997 before last season's 1-0 victory over the Mount.  Alyssa Kirk scored the game-winning goal in the 43rd minute.

Binghamton and Temple have each won one game in the two games played against each other.  The Owls defeated the Bearcats last year 2-0 at Ambler Sports Complex
