VESTAL, N.Y. – Temple women's soccer started its 2014 season with a 2-0 win over Binghamton on Friday night at Bearcats Sport Complex. Kelly Farrell and Gina DiTaranto scored goals in the first half to lead the Owls over the Bearcats.
"We did a lot of things correctly for the first game of the season," said Head Coach Seamus O'Connor. "The intensity was there for the first minute. The team showed a good understanding of what the coaching staff wanted from them. It was definitely a great start to the season."
DiTaranto scored the first goal from Temple in the 17th minute. Shannon Senour made a cross from the right end line where DiTaranto kicked it in from six yards out for the first goal as a Temple Owl for the Delaware transfer.
"Gina had a very good game," said O'Connor. "She was very dangerous around the box. She's a talented player for us, and it was great to see her get off to a good start here at Temple."
Farrell gave Temple a two goal lead less than two minutes later in the 19th minute. Following a goalie collision, Farrell took advantage of a loose ball and scored from 18 yards out.
Shauni Kerkhoff made four saves in the game to earn the shutout.
Temple outshot Binghamton 4-3 in the first half while Binghamton finished with nine shots, one more than Temple.
The Owls return home for the only non-conference game of the season at Ambler Sports Complex on Sunday against Mount St. Mary's at 3:00 p.m. Mount St. Mary's opened up their season today with a 6-0 loss to George Washington and fell to Temple 1-0 at home last season.
