8.24.14 | Women's Soccer
AMBLER, Pa. – Temple women's soccer defeated Mount St. Mary's 3-0 on Sunday afternoon in its home opener at Ambler Sports Complex. Temple improves to 2-0 while Mount St. Mary's drops to 0-2.
"I'm very excited because I challenged (the team) to see if they could get two wins this weekend," Head coach Seamus O'Connor said. "It's hard when you go on the road on Friday night and get back at 2:00 a.m. We just tried to recover yesterday, and that's just tough to do… I was very pleased with how the girls came out today and competed."
The Owls scored two goals in the first half as they dominated possession of the ball all game. Alyssa Kirk scored the first goal in the second minute of the game. Kirk took a corner kick on the left side of the field and bent it in the top right corner of the net. Gina DiTaranto capitalized off another corner kick in the 26th minute. With Kirk taking the corner kick, DiTaranto scored from five feet into the right side of the net.
DiTaranto added a second goal in the second half in the 52nd minute. DiTaranto put away a ball five feet from the net off a cross to the left side by Kelly Farrell. Kaylee Harner also got an assist on the play. DiTaranto now has three goals in the two games played by the Owls.
"Our (midfielders) have done a great job in getting forward, "DiTaranto said." "Sending balls across has been one of our strategies, and I was just lucky to be there to finish both great balls."
Shauni Kerkhoff got her second shutout of the season and made one save in the game. Emily Doherty replaced Kerkhoff for the last nine minutes of the game to make her collegiate debut.
The Owls outshot the Mountaineers 34-3 in the game. Temple also had 12 corner kicks compared to Mount St. Mary's one.
Temple heads out on the road as they play the next eight games away from Ambler Sports Complex. Temple won't travel too far next Friday when they take on city rival Saint Joseph's at 5:00 p.m.
