Men's Tennis Opens 2014 Fall Play at Navy Invitational Against St. Bonaventure

ANNAPOLIS, M.D. - The Temple men's tennis team began their 2014 fall season at the Navy Invitational this afternoon. The Owls squared off against St. Bonaventure and combined to win 11 of the 12 matches played. Each of the four doubles matches were won by the Owls along with seven of the eight singles matches.
"I was really happy with how the team came out and played in our first competition of the fall season," said head coach Steve Mauro. "We won all but one match today and that one loss was a close and hard-fought battle."
Juniors Nicolas Paulus and Hicham Belkssir paired up to defeat their opponents at the first doubles match with a score of 6-2. Sophomores Filip Stipcic and Vineet Naran defeated their opponents by the same score of 6-2 at the second doubles position. At the third doubles position, senior Hernan Vasconez and junior Ondre Cargill won their match 6-4. Winning by the largest margin of the doubles portion of the match was Temple's No. 4 team of juniors Maros Januvka and Santiago Canete with a score of 6-0.
The Owls were only defeated in one of their eight singles matches against St. Bonaventure. Paulus was a 4-6, 7-5, 6-2 winner at the No. 1 singles spot and Belkssir won 6-3, 6-3 at the No. 2 singles position. Canete won 6-3, 6-7(4), 6-4 at No. 4 and Vasconez defeated his opponent 7-5, 3-6, 7-5 in the No. 5 position. Naran was a 6-0, 6-2 winner at the sixth flight and Januvka picked up a 7-5, 2-6, 6-3 decision at number seven. Cargill was the other singles winner for Temple, earning a 6-3, 6-4 victory at the No. 8 singles position.
"I was pleased with the team's effort today and hope we can continue the momentum into our match tomorrow," said Mauro.
Temple will face host-team Navy at 10 a.m. on Sunday, Sept. 7 to finish out the Owls' first weekend of play.
