PHILADELPHIA – In straight set victories across the board, the men's tennis team defeated St. Francis College (N.Y.), 7-0 on Thursday, January 29 at Legacy Tennis Center. The Owls move to 2-2 on the season.
"I was really happy with the way that the guys came out today and played. They were especially strong in doubles" said head coach Steve Mauro.
The Owls captured the doubles point after Ian Glessing and Vineet Naran took their set at the third flight, 6-0, followed by Nicolas Paulus and Hicham Belkssir with a 6-2 win at the first flight. Santiago Canete and Ondre Cargill were also victorious at the second flight with a 6-4 set win.
In singles, the Owls swept the Terriers across the board. Belkssir and Naran were the first to record their victories with straight set shutouts, 6-0, 6-0 at the fifth and fourth flights, respectively. Cargill followed behind at the sixth flight with a 6-3, 6-1 win, with Canete on his heels at the first flight, 6-2, 6-0. Paulus finished the second flight with a 6-2, 7-5 victory, and Filip Stipcic rounded out the singles play with a 7-6, 6-2 win at the third flight.
Mauro hopes that the way the team played against St. Francis will show in the rest of the matches this season.
"I liked the intensity the team showed during the match today and hopefully that will carry us through the match against Penn State on Sunday," said Mauro.
The team will travel to State College to take on the Nittany Lions (2-0) at 1 p.m.
