Women's Gymnastics Opens Season at Eastern Michigan With Stellar Individual Performances

YPSILANTI, Mich. – Temple women's gymnastics dropped its 2015 opener in a dual meet at Eastern Michigan on Friday night in the Convocation Center. The Eagles won with a team score of 193.925 while the Owls registered a team score of 187.2.
The Owls best event of the night was on the balance beam with a team score of 48.225, topping the Eagles (48.175) in the event. Alexis Arena had the highest score of both teams with a 9.750. Lauren Capone also scored above a 9.7 with a 9.725. Briana Odom and Taylor Rakus performed routines that earned them a 9.6, and Mikaela Postlethwait garnered a 9.55.
Temple started the meet on the uneven bars, where they earned a team score of 44.3. Arone (9.0) and Brittanie DeMeno (9.15) were the only two to score above at least a 9.0. Capone was right behind with an 8.95. Odom finished with an 8.8, and Rakus earned an 8.4.
Capone (9.675) led the Owls on vault to a team score of 47.6. Each Owl gymnast finished above 9.0. Michaela Lapent finished second with a 9.55, and Victoria Reggiani had a 9.525. Gina Tucker and DeMeno both earned a 9.425 while Jasmine Johnson got a 9.025.
The Owls finished the meet on the floor and earned a team score of 47.075. Capone once again led the way with a 9.725. Postlethwait earned a 9.5 to finish second for the Owls. Lapent earned a 9.425, while Arone's routine garnered a 9.375. Jasmine Johnson also finished above 9.0 with a 9.05, and Reggiani finished with an 8.8.
Competing as the only all-around gymnast in the meet, Capone finished with a combined score of 38.075 off the four events. Capone had the highest score for Temple on floor and vault and tied for the second best score of both teams on the beam.
Temple will be back in action next Sunday at 1:00 p.m. at the George Washington Invitational. Cornell, Pitt, UNC and ECAC rival Penn will also participate in the invitational.
