Men's Soccer Closes Out Non-Conference Play with 3-1 Victory Over Columbia

10.13.15 | Men's Soccer

AMBLER, Pa. – Temple men's soccer logged a 3-1 victory over the Columbia Lions Tuesday afternoon to close out non-conference play for the 2015 season. The Owls now stand at 9-3-2 overall entering a four-game series of American Athletic Conference play.

"I think the guys have played well the past two games," said head coach David MacWilliams. "I thought we moved the ball very well today. We created a lot of issues for a team that had only given up five goals in all of their other games."

The first two goals for the Owls came within just 21 seconds of each other in the 26th minute. Freshman Hermann Doerner earned his first career goal and first of the day for the Owls after Joonas Jokinen was able to trap a long ball and quickly slide to Belal Mohamed. Mohamed made a quick pass to Doerner who took a left footed shot from outside the box that landed in the top left corner.

Moments after the restart, Mohmaed found Jokinen wide open near the top of the box and Jokinen was able to chip the ball up and over the Lions' goalkeeper to log the second goal.

Five minutes into the second half, the Owls' earned a corner kick that was served in by junior Stefan Mueller. Mueller connected with Brendon Creed who headed the ball directly to Carlos Moros Gracia, who capitalized and headed in goal number three to the right side of the net. This was the second goal for Moros Gracia this season.

Goalkeeper Alex Cagle was able to make seven saves to keep the Lions out of the net through nearly 89 minutes. Cagle allowed the Lions' lone goal of the game off a penalty kick taken by Joe Morris.

The Owls and the Lions saw equal chances throughout the game, each logging 14 total shots and earning two corner kicks.

Temple ends its non-conference play undefeated while playing at the Ambler Sports Complex.

Next up, the Owls travel to Tulsa to take on the conference rival on Saturday, Oct. 17 in search of their second conference victory.

"Tulsa is a very tough team and any time you play a team on the road that's a very difficult game," said MacWilliams. "Hopefully we can build from these two wins and get another win in Tulsa."
