Digging Deeper with Temple Volleyball: Vandegrift & Yingling
10.21.15 | Women's Volleyball
Throughout the 2015 season, two volleyball student-athletes will be featured in our "Digging Deeper" player features. This week, get to know freshman Hannah Vandegrift and senior Kayla Yingling.
How long have you been playing volleyball and how did you start?
Vandegrift:Â I began playing when I was 11, so its almost been 9 years now. My sister played and I was always in the gym so I just picked up on it.Â
Yingling:Â I started playing volleyball in the 6th grade, well I wouldn't say really started because I got cut from the team. But, I did the intramural's that were offered and then got back into it and started really playing in the 7th grade for my school team. So, it's been about 10 years!
What is your dream job?
Vandegrift:Â To own and operate my own Physical Therapy office.
Yingling:Â My dream job is to really fall in love with a job that fits me and I enjoy going to every day. I can't really say I have a "dream job" because I am still young and still trying to find out what I am best at!
If you could play any sport (other than volleyball, of course) what would it be and why?
Vandegrift:Â Swimming, I love being in the water and you can't sweat.
Yingling:Â I would do gymnastics. I love going to their meets and I always wished I could do all the flips and everything they do!
What is your pre-match ritual?
Vandegrift:Â Listen to Mia sing constant throwbacks.
Yingling:Â I don't really have a personal pre-match ritual. Typically on game day I will listen to music, depends on the mood I am in, could be 2000's R&B or Today's Hip Hop and Pop stations, but eventually the team music comes on and then I listen to that. This year we have been listening to Justin Bieber's "What Do You Mean?" song almost before every game. We say it is good luck if we hear it before!
Who is the best dancer on the team?
Vandegrift:Â Dara Peric- She's the Serbian dancing queen!
Yingling:Â Kir and Janine only because they do this one weird dance (I forget the name) that they learned on YouTube.Â
What is your dream vacation destination and why?
Vandegrift: Bora Bora, I love being on the water and just a relaxing area where there isn't a ton of people around so I can just chill out.  Â
Yingling:Â I would love to go to Greece. It looks absolutely beautiful from the pictures I always see on social media. One day.
What has been your favorite memory of playing volleyball at Temple?
Vandegrift:Â When Janine was running into the court and Halle was yelling at her to roll her socks down and I thought she was saying "Janine sucks!"
Yingling: Oh my, I have lots and lots of memories from playing volleyball here at Temple that I could never pick just one. They range from the obvious beating UCF at home last year to watching How to Get Away With Murder every Thursday night with the team. I had made the best friends here, we go through literally everything together so you could imagine the amount of memories that I have from my crazy teammates.
