Fencing to Host Temple Open in the Liacouras Center This Weekend

10.28.15 | Women's Fencing

PHILADELPHIA - For the first time in the 36-year history of the Temple Fencing Open, the event will be held in the Liacouras Center and is set for Saturday, Oct. 31 (women) and Sunday, Nov. 1 (men). The meet, which is the largest individual collegiate tournament in the nation, is the first of the 2015-16 season for the Owls.

"We are extremely excited about having the Temple Open in the Liacouras Center this year," said Temple head coach Nikki Franke. "I think it's going to really showcase a high-quality tournament for the fencers that are there and it's going to give them a very positive feeling. It's the first competition of the season and this will be a great way for these teams to start off the season and to feel special, competing in a bigtime venue. This shows that our university thinks highly of our program, to provide a venue like that, and we're very excited. It's going to help us run a much smoother tournament."

Temple's 17-member roster includes six seniors this season, as well as five freshmen. The team will look to senior foilist Demi Antipas for veteran leadership, as she has been named overall team captain this year. Antipas will also serve as the foil squad leader. Senior Gloria Aguilar is the sabre squad leader, and senior Jessica Hall has been named the epee squad leader for a second year in a row.

"Demi is a silent leader," said Franke. "She's probably one of the hardest-working fencers I've ever had. Her improvement in the time she's been here has really been very satisfying, but it's never good enough for her, and that's ok. She's really driven. She leads by example and sets a very good example for the team in what we should be doing and what it takes to accomplish the goals that we have."

Two Owls represented the program at the NCAA Championships last season, and both return this year. Senior Fatima Largaespada (foil) looks to make her fourth straight trip to the national tournament in her final year, while sophomore Safa Ibrahim (epee) was a standout as a freshman and looks to build upon that success in 2015-16.

The action at the Temple Open on Saturday begins around 8:30 a.m. and will go for much of the day. The event is free for fans.

"It's a lot of work putting it together," said Franke, "but at the end of the day when the coaches and athletes come up to you and thank you for running such a good tournament, that's kind of the satisfaction. We're looking forward to getting underway and seeing what the girls do, especially our freshmen at their first competition."
