Digging Deeper with Temple Volleyball: Sydlik & Guennewig

10.28.15 | Women's Volleyball

Throughout the 2015 season, two volleyball student-athletes will be featured in our "Digging Deeper" player features. This week, get to know senior Sandra Sydlik and freshman Carla Guennewig.

How long have you been playing volleyball and how did you start?
Sydlik: I've played since I was 15 years old and I started because of my mom. She played for East Germany and participated in the Olympic Games 1988.
Guennewig: I started in high school, so I have been playing for six years now. I got too tall for gymnastics, so I joined my older sister at volleyball practice. I enjoyed volleyball, and haven't stopped since.

What is your dream job?
Sydlik: As probably all business students would say, working for Apple or Google.
Guennewig: Still trying to find something that fits me best and that Iwould love to do every day. but someday I want to work on a little island somewhere in the world at a turtle breeding station.

If you could play any sport (other than volleyball, of course) what would it be and why?
Sydlik: Surfing -- I would get to practice on the beach every day instead of a gym!
Guennewig: I would like to try tennis or maybe try to run a marathon.

What is your pre-match ritual?
Sydlik: I actually don't have one, but I usually can't stand still because I'm always nervous.
Guennewig: Reminding myself of why I love the game.

Who is the best dancer on the team?
Sydlik: Dara
Guennewig: DARA

What is your dream vacation destination and why?
Sydlik: I want to go to Istanbul because it's the only city located on two continents. I also want to go to New Zealand and Indonesia because the beaches are amazing there.
Guennewig: Actually I want to travel the whole world, but if I have to choose where to start, I think Antarctica would be an interesting place.

What has been your favorite memory of playing volleyball at Temple?
Sydlik: Besides some great wins against SMU and UCF, meeting my team and making friends I will never forget. It's been an unforgettable experience so far and I'm glad and proud to be part of the Temple volleyball team.
Guennewig: Seeing the crowd at the home opener!
