Fencing Goes 3-2 Against Tough Competition at the Elite Invitational

11.21.15 | Women's Fencing

PHILADELPHIA - Temple fencing faced top competition at its first dual meet of the year, and the Owls came away with a record of 3-2 at the Elite Invitational hosted by Penn on Saturday. Both of Temple's losses came against Top 10 teams, including reigning NCAA champ Columbia.

It came down to the wire in Temple's first match of the day against Ohio State, last year's seventh-place finisher among women's teams at the NCAA Championships. The sabre squad recorded a 5-4 win over the Buckeyes, but the team ultimately lost by just a single point, 14-13.

The Owls faced Columbia next, and lost 15-12. The epee and sabre squads both defeated their counterparts from Columbia.

Temple ran the table the rest of the day with wins against Air Force (23-4), NJIT (20-7) and Johns Hopkins (25-2).

Eight Temple fencers went undefeated against Air Force, and the sabre squad recorded its first shutout of the day in the win over NJIT. Both foil and sabre later went undefeated against Johns Hopkins.

Leading the foil squad were juniors Kristen Kemnitzer and Miranda Litzinger, who finished the day 7-1 and 6-2, respectively. Senior Jessica Hall and sophomore Safa Ibrahim led the epee squad with 9-2 overall records. Senior Olivia Wynn went 7-0 for sabre, while freshman Blessing Olaode was also undefeated at 5-0 and senior Petra Khan finished strong at 7-2.

Next up for the Owls is the Sacred Heart Invitational on Sunday, Dec. 6.
